89 new yorker, 3.0, any ideas on how to get the key out of the keyway?

You have to take the gear off first then take the key out, but you don't need to take it off to replace the belt. If you want to replace the front seal just take the gear off the seal will clear the key. That said after you take the gear off use your punch and hammer on the engine end of the key, as you drive that end deeper the other end will roll up when it rolls high enough put your punch under that end and tap the punch. The key will roll on out for you.
