Why did America not take Northern Ireland as an extra state back in the late sixties/early seventies.?

Don't think the good folk of Ulster would want to be a part of USA - how much American Catholic money was sent over to support the IRA who want a united Ireland - the majority of Protestant Ulster would not want to belong to a Country which helped inflict such suffering upon many innocent people.
