How long are drainage tubes left on after a gynecomastia (male reduction) surgery?

My friend had reduction surgery and the doctor put in some drainage tubes in him. He has had them on for 2 days now, went to the doctor who told him they were clogged, and now he wants him to keep them on for 3 more days. Is this normal? What's the risk of infection?
